Powder coat vs. stainless steel trash receptacles

By the Vernwell team · Updated

Short answer

Powder-coated steel is the better choice when a receptacle needs to match an interior palette, because it comes in a wide range of colors and hides fingerprints. Stainless steel suits back-of-house and utilitarian spaces where a neutral metal look is wanted, but it shows smudges and needs frequent wiping in front-of-house areas.

Powder-coated steel

Powder coating is a dry paint applied electrostatically and cured in an oven, forming a thick, even layer that is tougher than conventional liquid paint. It comes in nearly any color and in matte, satin, or textured sheens.

For design-led spaces, that color range is the main advantage: the receptacle can match millwork, wall finishes, or furniture instead of standing out as equipment. Textured and matte powder coats also hide fingerprints and light scuffs well.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is strong, corrosion resistant, and easy to sanitize, which is why it dominates commercial kitchens and back-of-house areas. Grade 304 is standard indoors; grade 316 is used near salt air, pools, and harsh chemicals.

Its drawbacks in front-of-house spaces are visual: brushed stainless shows fingerprints and streaks, and it limits the palette to a single cool metal tone.

Other materials you'll see

  • Plastic and rotomolded polyethylene: inexpensive and light, but reads as utility equipment.
  • Wood or wood laminate: warm, but vulnerable to moisture and wear around the opening.
  • Stone or concrete: very durable outdoors, heavy, and hard to move for cleaning.

Mixing materials

Many premium receptacles combine materials: a powder-coated body for color with metal trim at the top and base, where contact and cleaning are heaviest. Vernwell receptacles use this approach, with a powder-coated steel body in 16 colors, Brass PVD or Chrome PVD trim, and a removable galvanized steel liner.

Frequently asked questions

Is powder coat durable enough for high-traffic areas?

Yes. Powder coat forms a thick, cured layer that is tougher than liquid paint and is widely used on commercial furniture and fixtures in high-traffic spaces.

Which stainless steel grade is best outdoors?

Grade 304 works in most outdoor settings. Use 316 near salt air, pools, or where de-icing chemicals are common.

Do powder-coated receptacles show fingerprints?

Much less than brushed stainless steel, especially in matte or textured finishes.
